The electric vehicle industry has long been plagued by concerns over battery longevity and replacement costs. However, new data from Recurrent and Geotab suggests that our understanding of EV battery life may be outdated.
According to the data, the average EV retains 97% of its original range after three years and 95% after five years. This is in stark contrast to the early days of EVs, when batteries were notorious for degrading rapidly. The introduction of newer models with improved battery chemistry, thermal regulation, and management systems has clearly made a significant difference.
Despite these improvements, new EV sales continue to struggle in the US. In June, Americans bought just 74,967 new EVs, down nearly 28% from the previous year. This is particularly concerning given that federal EV subsidies expired last year and emissions regulations were rolled back. However, there are glimmers of hope: the used EV market is booming, with sales rising 20.3% in June compared to the previous year.
Edmunds reported a slight increase in consumer interest in EVs, driven in part by rising gas prices. Several automakers have cancelled plans for new EV models, citing declining demand. However, this response may be short-sighted. With governments around the world increasingly committed to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation, it’s likely that EV demand will recover eventually.
The industry’s shift towards electric vehicles is not without its challenges. One of the major concerns surrounding EVs has always been battery replacement costs. According to Recurrent, the battery replacement rate for EVs with model years 2022 and later was just 0.3%. This suggests that newer EVs are designed to last longer and require less frequent replacements.
The used EV market is also worth noting. As prices drop due to changing demand, it’s never been a better time to consider buying a used EV. With many models available, consumers can find affordable options without breaking the bank.
The industry’s response to these developments has been telling. Automakers cancelling plans for new EV models may be too hasty in their assessment of declining demand. As governments increasingly commit to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation, it’s likely that EV demand will recover eventually.
In the end, the EV industry’s biggest challenge is not technical – it’s psychological. Changing consumer behavior and perceptions takes time, effort, and a willingness to adapt. But as the world continues to move towards sustainable transportation, one thing is clear: electric vehicles are here to stay.
