A recent development has highlighted this disconnect: Amazon's decision to finance a massive gas plant in Texas, which would become the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

The project, known as GW Ranch, boasts 35 turbines generating 7. 65 gigawatts of electricity – larger than any existing gas plant and more than twice the size of many smaller cities' energy needs.
